Microsoft Copilot for Legal Teams

Support Legal Work Without Replacing Legal Judgement

Practical Microsoft Copilot adoption and workflow implementation for law firms, in-house legal departments, legal assistants and compliance teams across Canada and the United States.

A lawyer starts the day with a full calendar. A vendor agreement needs review. A client is waiting for an update. Leadership needs a plain-language explanation of a regulatory change. An internal policy requires input from several departments.

The legal analysis matters, but much of the day can be consumed by finding information, reading long documents, preparing first drafts, tracking revisions and turning complex language into clear communication.

Microsoft Copilot can support selected parts of this work inside Microsoft 365. Its documented legal capabilities include understanding, summarising, drafting, redlining and reviewing legal documents. Microsoft also offers legal capabilities for Word desktop and Copilot Cowork.

Skillgine helps legal teams move beyond individual AI experiments. We help organizations identify suitable use cases, establish human-review requirements, design controlled workflows, train employees by role and provide ongoing adoption support.

Legal Teams Carry More Than Legal Work

Professional time is often consumed by document and administrative pressure

A lawyer receives a lengthy vendor agreement that the business wants signed quickly. The current playbook must be found. Key clauses need attention. Obligations and deadlines must be identified. Leadership also needs a clear summary before making a decision.

The lawyer understands the legal issues. The challenge is finding the right information, completing the first-pass review and explaining the findings while other matters continue to move.

Copilot can support parts of that preparation. It can help produce an initial document summary, answer focused questions, propose selected edits and organize information for review.

The qualified legal professional remains responsible for checking the source language, applicable jurisdiction, current law and final recommendation

Practical Microsoft Copilot Use Cases for Legal Teams

Start with defined tasks that support professional work

Microsoft’s legal learning materials include scenarios involving contract summaries, regulatory-guidance drafts, policy collaboration, compliance-risk organization and stakeholder communication. These are examples of Copilot-supported workflows, not substitutes for authoritative legal research or professional legal conclusions.

Contract summaries

Develop an initial summary of selected terms, obligations, deadlines and open questions for verification by a legal professional.

Clause-focused analysis

Ask precise questions about defined provisions and compare the response directly with the source language.

Tracked-change redlines

Request selected edits as tracked changes in Word, then review each proposed change before accepting or rejecting it.

Playbook-based contract review

Microsoft documents a specialised Word workflow that can review a contract against a playbook. The playbook is broken into rules that Copilot uses during the review.

Redline summaries

Create an initial explanation of tracked changes, their possible impact and which party may benefit. Legal for Cowork includes a skill for summarising redlines.

Obligation and deadline extraction

Organize identified obligations, deliverables and key dates into a working tracker. Microsoft lists extracting obligations and deadlines as a Legal for Cowork skill.

}

Case chronologies

Create an initial dated timeline from authorized case materials. Legal for Cowork includes a case-chronology skill, but the resulting chronology must be checked against the underlying records.

Legal-matter summaries

Prepare a structured view of developments, actions, deadlines and open questions for review by the lawyer responsible for the matter.

Defined-term and cross-reference checks

Legal for Cowork includes skills for checking defined terms and cross-references. The legal professional must still determine whether an identified issue is legally or commercially significant.

Policy development

Develop and revise internal policy language using approved requirements, sources and stakeholder feedback.

Stakeholder communication

Create first drafts of emails, executive summaries and plain-language explanations based on instructions from the responsible legal professional.

Minutes and resolutions

Legal for Cowork includes a skill for drafting minutes and resolutions from meeting content. Final records require review for completeness, accuracy and proper authorization.

Built for Legal Work in Microsoft 365

Work inside supported Microsoft experiences instead of another isolated writing tool

Microsoft offers first-party legal capabilities for Copilot in Word desktop and Copilot Cowork. They are available to users with an active Microsoft 365 Copilot commercial licence, subject to organizational settings and product availability.

In Word desktop, documented legal capabilities include:

  • Summarising and explaining legal documents
  • Adding other documents as context
  • Providing source-linked document citations
  • Suggesting tracked-change redlines
  • Reviewing contracts against playbooks

Legal for Cowork includes documented skills for contract analysis, case chronologies, obligation extraction, legal-matter summaries, defined-term checks, cross-reference checks, legal memos and redline summaries.

Not every capability is available in every Microsoft application. Availability can vary by licence, platform, administrative settings, language, plugin access and product rollout.

Why Microsoft Copilot Is Different

Connect AI assistance with familiar applications, approved information and business controls

A general AI chat application can help create generic text. Legal teams often need greater control over source material, document access, revisions and professional review.

With an eligible licence, Microsoft Copilot can work across organizational content that the signed-in user is permitted to access, including emails, meetings, calendars, chats, documents, sites and files. Copilot does not grant additional permissions.

Microsoft also provides administrative control over the legal capabilities in Word and Copilot Cowork. Organizations can decide which users and groups should have access.

Copilot still requires practical learning. Legal professionals must know how to provide precise instructions, choose authoritative sources, verify citations, specify the jurisdiction, review proposed edits and recognize when Copilot should not be used.

Use Microsoft 365 Controls, Then Address Legal-Specific Risks

Security technology supports governance but does not replace professional responsibility

Microsoft says Copilot only presents organizational information that the signed-in user is permitted to access. Microsoft also states that prompts, responses and organizational data accessed through Microsoft Graph are not used to train the foundation models used by Microsoft Copilot.

Depending on the organization’s licences and configuration, Microsoft 365 controls can include identity management, encryption, sensitivity labels, retention, auditing, data-loss prevention and SharePoint access governance.

Organizations must still review:

  • Matter-level access
  • Client confidentiality
  • Privilege requirements
  • Ethical walls and information barriers
  • External sharing
  • Retention and litigation holds
  • Approved plugins and connectors
  • Professional-conduct requirements
  • Applicable privacy laws
  • Human-review standards

Microsoft 365 controls can support legal information governance. They do not independently establish that a workflow preserves privilege or satisfies every professional, contractual or regulatory obligation.

Copilot Does Not Provide Legal Advice

Every output requires qualified professional review

Microsoft says Copilot’s legal outputs are advisory. They do not constitute legal advice and are not a replacement for qualified legal judgement or professional legal counsel.

Microsoft also identifies important limitations:

Outputs and citations may be inaccurate
Copilot is not jurisdiction-aware by default
Results may not reflect recent legal or regulatory changes
Relevant clauses may be missed
Playbook guidance may be applied incorrectly
Legal nuance may be lost
Third-party information may be incomplete

Copilot should support preparation, drafting and review. It should not independently approve contracts, determine liability, confirm compliance, decide legal strategy or replace authoritative legal research.
